Syndicated cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz heads stellar Graphic Design panel
Los Angeles, CA – December 1, 2008 – Many local, artistically inclined high school students attended Al Borde’s third installment of the “Cool Careers for Me” event series on November 15th, which offers mentoring opportunities and one-on-one interaction with seasoned professionals in select fields. After hosting prior career events that focused on journalism and fashion, Al Borde’s latest high school mentoring event/concert, hosted in Boyle Heights, consisted of a panel of exemplary role models whose presentations centered on debunking the myth that a career in graphic art is not lucrative.
Graphic Artists Lalo Alcaraz, Bobby Milly, and Gustavo Muñiz among others all shared accounts of their early interests in art, how they pursued their passion through high school and college, answered students’ questions and offered tips about how the students could also achieve success in this field. The enthusiastic crowd of high schoolers was very inquisitive of the five-member panel, whose stories blended humor with smart tips and sound career advice.
Several of the students at the event were inspired by the panel. “There really aren’t very many people who believe that a career in art is possible, especially in my family,” commented Veronica Rios from South Gate R.O.C.K.S after school program. “But listening to today’s speakers shows me that anything is possible as long as I follow my passion.”
“Opportunities such as this for inner city students are far too rare,” stated Adriana Hernandez-Fernandez, Al Borde’s Sr. Manager of Events and Promotions. “We want to provide readers with something rewarding and enriching in addition to the unique entertainment events we offer, such as our Not So Acoustic Sessions concerts, and our Dia de los Muertos Music and Arts Festival. That is why we share with our readers some of Al Borde’s many great resources and contacts, hoping that they will make the most of this unique opportunity.”
Al Borde’s “Cool Careers for Me” event consisted of a “Rockband” competition among the high schools, an interactive panel discussion/question-and-answer session, as well as an exciting musical performance by Los Angeles drum & bass duo Mezklah. The panelists were Lalo Alcaraz, Syndicated cartoonist, “La Cucaracha” cartoon strip; Josue Meneses, Freelance graphic designer, creator of Pixel Surgery Lab; Bobby Milly, Director of Computer Animation Program, Los Angeles Film School; Gustavo Muñiz, Instructor of Illustrator and Photoshop, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise; Melvin Ortiz, Creative/Brand Manager, Al Borde. Sponsors for this event were El Clasificado, the LA Film School, and Monster Energy Drinks.
