Getting Kinky With Kinky

What do you call a band that is influenced by Los Tigres del Norte, Los Bukis, Pink Floyd and the Chemical Brothers? If you can think of a name better than Kinky, I’m sure band members Gil, Ulises, Carlos, Omar, and Cesar would like to hear it.
Seriously, if you don’t know Kinky by now, you may never, never know them. The name reflects the band’s music: a little weird, strange, out of the ordinary and unique all at the same time. Listening to them on your ipod while working out makes your gym experience a whole lot better, but the work out you get when you see them live puts the gym to shame.
Hello! We gave you the tickets, of course we were going to be there too! Kinky, currently touring and promoting for their album Reina Delux, brought the city to life when they performed alongside Money Mark at the Mayan Theater on Tuesday, March 18. I had never seen a Latin Alternative show as eclectic as this. People of all races (white, Asian, Latinos, Black) gathered to see Kinky perform. As soon as the lights went off and the notes to “Mirando de Lado” were heard, this same crowd began to cheer, clap, dance and mosh as if they all had just drunk a whole 12 pack of Monster Energy Drink. Yes, concerts usually do begin this way. An audience goes to see their favorite band, wait about an hour or two after the show start time on their ticket, the band finally comes out and the crowd goes wild. That same emotion usually starts dying off after about half an hour into the show. Oh, but Kinky is definitely an exception. That same excitement that begins when their show starts stays constant throughout the whole show and the encore. I’m sure that this has to do with the energy that the band members themselves cast on stage. Every single band member brought their granito de arena to the stage, but of course it was Cesar and Gil who stole the show. Cesar, danced around on stage with his bass wearing sunglasses, a cowboy hat, and an open buttoned silk shirt that made him look extra sexy. Ese sí que me gusta por coqueto. And Gil, oh my Gil, what can I say about him except that I would do anything to be Ely Guerra for one day. It’s hard to believe that such a tremendous amount of energy can come from a guy who stands at about 5’10 and weighs probably the same amount as Nicole Richie. During the show, almost every single song that you wanted to hear was sung, including “Mas”, “Soun Tha Mi Primer Amour”, “Sister Twisted”, and “How Do They Do That?” Right when you think the concert is over, the crowd starts screaming “Otra, otra, otra” and the boys come back out to do an Encore. During this set you hear “Mexican Radio”, “Presidente” and “A Donde Van Los Muertos”. Then it was really time to say goodbye to kinky and go back to boring.
If you didn’t make it to either of the shows that they had here in the LA area and want to plan a road trip, Kinky will continue and their tour in other cities including Fresno, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara. Their tour concludes on April 13 in Serpentino. Oh, and don’t be surprised if you go see the film La Misma Luna and notice El Cucuy, LA radio DJ, listening to “Superman es Illegal” sung by the guys from Kinky. Call me psychic, but I see many great things for this band.
So…… ¿A donde van los muertos? I have no idea, but I’m sure that this past Tuesday, they went to the Mayan Theater to check out Kinky and they left “queriendo más y más.”
Check it out!
I caught up with Gil a few months ago backstage at one of the Zoe shows. There, he told Al Borde what he was currently listening to. To see the video, check out the videos on my Myspace page at www.myspace.com/sugarvanessa.
