2010 Sunset Strip Music Festival Weighs Heavy with Slash, The Smashing Pumpkins and more

Since 2008, organizers to the Sunset Strip Music Festival have honored one individual or party that has contributed to the music industry and the history of the mile-and-a-half stretch of Sunset Boulevard. Last year it was Ozzy Osbourne, the year before that it was Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and Elmer Valentine, owners of some of the most important cubs on Sunset Boulevard. This year, the title of the Sunset Strip Music Festival honoree goes to a legendary musician who has collaborated with everyone from Michael Jackson and Ozzy Osbourne to Quentin Tarantino and most recently, Fergie.




Rock legend, Slash, the former lead guitarist to rockers Guns N’ Roses, leader of Slash’s Snakepit, and co-founder of rock band Velvet Revolver, will receive this year’s annual Sunset Strip Music Festival honoree title this Thursday at the House of Blues Sunset where the three-day festival will be kicked into full gear with various musical performers. The tribute to Slash will be hosted by Slash’s rock colleagues Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue, Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead, and Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains.

The 2010 SSMF honoree and 2007 inductee of the Hollywood Rockwalk, will take the festivities from his Thursday night tribute to a special Saturday evening performance where he along with American musician, Myles Kennedy, and pop singer, Fergie, will perform songs from Slash’s self-titled debut solo album.

Also part of the 2010 SSMF, is the headlining act of American rockers, The Smashing Pumpkins. The rock band, which is currently in promotion of their 2010 release Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, recently released another free download from one of the albums 44 tracks, and will be closing off the SSMF festivities with their slotted Saturday 8:20 p.m. performance on the Street Fest Stage.

And although The Smashing Pumpkins and this year’s festival honoree will possibly attract and older, rocker crowd, this year’s musical additions might attract a younger, and musically diverse crowd as well. Multi-Grammy Award recipient, actor and hip hop lyricist, Common, will be taking the mic on Saturday’s Street Fest Stage where only minutes before, Travie McCoy will be performing his popular “Billionaire” single from his first solo album Lazarus.

Concerts and festivities of the Sunset Strip Music Festival will take place at the Cat Club, House of Blues, Key Club, The Roxy Theatre, Viper Room, and Whisky A Go-Go. The street festival outdoor stages will be on Sunset between San Vicente and Doheny, with the West Stage on the Doherty end and the East Stage on the opposite side of the strip.

A limited number of three-day VIP passes are available for $250 each. The pass gives you access to the Slash tribute event, all music venues on the three nights of the festival (pending capacity), access to the VIP tent area which includes views of the West stage, seating areas, and no-host full bar, allows you to go in and out of the festival on the day of the street festival (this is the only ticket that allows that), and priority access to the clubs within the closure during the street festival on Aug. 28.

The single-day VIP allows all of the above without the in and out priviledges, and the general admission single-day pass is $49.50 pre event, $65 the day of.
