Morrissey- Dándole duro y parejo en “Years of Refusal”

Whether you love or loathe The Smiths and Morrissey, you have to give props to the guy- Morrissey is one talented musician, he has a haunting and peculiar voice and a superb approach to music, plus there’s no denying he’s a gifted lyricist. While many musicians and artists in general deteriorate (musically speaking) over time, Moz es como el vino- mientras más viejo, más bueno. Although Morrissey has nothing new under his belt, on his just released ninth album “Years of Refusal” he brings to the table more of the same but to a whole different level. Nostalgia never sounded better. The hard songs rock harder, the nostalgic songs are more touching, and his voice has a je ne sais quoi that can only be acquired through the years. Years of Refusal
For his ninth solo album, Moz doesn’t switch gears and sticks to the same formula… after all, if it’s not broken, why fix it? What Morrissey did however, was spice things up a little bit and turn his energy a
couple of notches higher. And while the Morrissey of 2009 is not as exciting as he used to be, in spite of his focus on aging and mortality in “Years of Refusal” he shows the world that he can still rock.“Years of Refusal” is filled with rockin’ guitars, lovelorn lyrics, killer baselines, monstrous choruses, and even a glimpse of gutsy pop.
Perhaps it’s the wisdom that comes with age, perhaps he just doesn’t care about the “what will people think”… whatever it is, on “Years of Refusal” Moz comes out ballsy and fresh, at least for someone about to hit the big 5-0.
At a half century old, Morrissey releases “Years of Refusal”, perhaps one of his best solo albums.
