Meet Art Martinez. He’s a Long Beach resident, an artist, promoter, musician, and most recently the winner of Al Borde’s Día de los Muertos Altar Competition. I can still hear La Santa Cecilia’s “Klezmer” in my head from the day of. Anyhow, if you missed the show you definitely missed out. But the music isn’t the only thing you’ll have to hear of from word of mouth. The event also had some pretty sick art displays from local artists. Art and his Red Hands Media team pulled off an insane altar paying homage to the late Michael Jackson. I touched base with this fueled-by-art artist and he was ever so kind as to give us a brief rundown on his inspiration for his MJ altar, talked to us about Red Hands Media and about his preferred weapons of mass destruction.

No importa que edad tengas or where you come from, we all grew up with a certain idea of what our future would be like. While some dreamed of flying, money, success, fame and glamour others dreamed of less frivolous things. Unfortunately and because of whatever circumstances, most people are forced to grow out of those childhood dreams. Ahora, si eres de los pocos soñadores ilusos que se aferran a esos sueños, te habrás dado cuenta que mantener ese sueño vivito y coleando es más difícil de lo que pensabas. Many give up along the way, but others persevere and with hard work and sleepless nights make things work. El que persevera alcanza, un claro ejemplo de esto es John Carlos De Luna, ganador del quinto concurso de arte anual del Día de los Muertos patrocinado por Al Borde.
The Upper Playground and Fifty24LA Gallery are proud to present “Brave Souls Illuminate”, a “remix” collection of new and old works by painter, illustrator and graffiti artist Maria “Toofly” Castillo. Lo chido de esta exhibición es que “Toofly”, originally from NYC, doesn’t limit herself to the canvas; on “Brave Souls Illuminate” you’ll also find an installation on display. Through her she’ll take you on a journey of a self proclaimed, “around the way girl” using hard and fluid lines, hand styles, and self confidence to declare a spot in New York’s graffiti subculture, typically dominated by men and fierce attitude.
With Halloween right around the corner, it is more than expected to find several art galleries join the festivities and showcase spooky and Halloween-themed exhibits. While there are many daunting exhibits out there, few are as scary as the one at drkrm.gallery, who once again bring you a hell of an exhibit. Even though it’s all made up of photography and a couple of videos, what makes “Seeing Things: Ghost Polaroids” utterly terrifying is the fact that it’s all genuine. All the photographs being showcased have been studied and are certified to be authentic- zero manipulation, after all, they were taken in the early 90’s when Photoshop and technology where out of this world and virtually impossible to afford.
